Dr Athula Gunasekara

Dr Athula Gunasekara specialises in general adult and interventional cardiology and is an expert in performing interventions via radial artery approach. He is renowned for rotational atherectomy and intervention of chronic total occlusions. 

Dr Gunasekara graduated from Queensland University in 1997 and completed his interventional cardiology training at Westmead Hospital. -He further developed his skills at the prestigious Mount Sinai Cardiovascular Institute in New York in 2008.

Today, his clinical interests are in complex coronary intervention, percutaneous therapy for valvular heart disease, peripheral vascular intervention, and new device therapy.

• Dr. Gunasekara is a Member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and an Associate Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
• He is a Visiting Medical Officer at the Sydney Adventist Hospital, Norwest Private Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital.
• Dr. Gunasekara is a regular presenter at local GP meetings and has conducted international workshops in rotational atherectomy and complex coronary intervention. He is also qualified in CT coronary angiography.
• Dr Gunasekara, who’s also fluent in Sinhalese, consults in Sydney Cardiology’s Blacktown, Castle Hill and Westmead practices.
