What is it?

An ECG test uses a machine to measure and record the electrical activity of your heart. The ECG is a painless test that detects heart abnormalities by measuring the electrical activity generated by the heart as it contracts, and is a very useful tool for determining whether a person has heart disease. Electrodes are placed on your skin and the electrocardiograph records the electrical activity of the heart muscle and displays this data as a trace on a screen or on paper. The ECG reading is then interpreted by a medical practitioner.

What you do

The ECG is a simple and painless test to have done. You’ll be asked to remove all clothing and jewellery to the waist, so the electrodes can be placed on different parts of your body. We’ll ask you to stay still and breathe normally while the machine takes samples. The test usually takes 5-10 minutes.

What to bring

• Women should wear two-piece clothing and a loose-fitting gown will be provided.
